A new public charge rule proposed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security(DHS) would remove clear, existing protections and give immigration officers broad discretion in deciding whether immigrant families are “likely to become a public charge.” If finalized, this rule could deter families from accessing essential health, nutrition, and economic supports — even when they are eligible.
